Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyse some of the characteristics of scientific production by Primary Health Care nursing and describe the behaviour of the scientific community behind it.

A retrospective descriptive study of the journal articles indexed in the CUIDEN database between the years 1978-1998 were performed, searched using the keywords Primary Health Care and Nursing.

The analysis was carried out from a quantitative perspective, using empirical bibliometric laws, and from a bibliographical perspective, distinguishing topics of greatest interest and the characteristics of the publications used by the primary healthcare nurses.

3,05% of the articles indexed in CUIDEN were selected by the proposed query. Within the period of 21 years considered, the years 1991 to 1996 accounted for 77,72% of all the articles on Nursing Primary healthcare. 87,78% of the authors were occasional contributors, the rest wrote regular articles. The nucleus of Bradford was the subject of the journal "Rol de Enfermería" and the topics of most interest were primary healthcare and nursing care. Short articles were predominant (31,61%).

In general, the scientific nursing community behaved in a similar way to other areas of nursing, although there are two points worthy of note: the crisis and drop in the amount of published material, beginning in 1995-1996, and the absence of a journal specialised in Primary Healthcare and Nursing, contrary to other areas of nursing ("Gerokomos" for geriatric nursing or "Enfermería Intensiva" for the area of intensive and coronary care).
