Abstract
Compression therapy is the treatment of choice for disorders of the venous and lymphatic system, either as preventative or therapeutic. It is highly effective provided it is applied correctly in each situation. However, a poorly performed compression not only does not provide the expected benefits, but it may even be harmful for the patient.
Although almost all compression techniques are effective, not all are useful in a given situation, and so it is of utmost importance to know how to find the most appropriate option according to the circumstance in which the patient finds him or herself.
The objective of this work is to show the different options available for compressing the lower extremities, as well as their advantages and drawbacks. It is also hoped to provide criteria for selecting the most suitable type of compression according to each situation, taking into account the different variables of: blood pressure, oedema, ulcers and the idiosyncrasies of the patient.
