Abstract

This study aims to identify the principal difficulties faced by students in the process of adaptation, practical training and the use of a work methodology such as The Nursing Care Process during their clinical practices.

A prospective descriptive and longitudinal study was carried out over four years (1996-2000). The object of the study were second year students attending the Manresa Nursing School.

64.9% of the students acknowledged that they had received support from the nurses and 91.9% said they learnt from them. 55.2% confessed that they had experienced difficulties with patient relation skills, although 83% managed to gain their trust. 90.6% stated that using the Nursing Care Process helped them to plan their treatments.

The students valued the nurses, they demonstrated that they had taken onboard the professional model and had developed their abilities during the clinical practices. Equally, they demonstrated that they became aware of their limitations, and did not have the skills needed to work in the profession and to properly use the nursing process.
