Abstract
It was in the reign of Alfonso XI when hospitals in the Guadalupe Village, a cluster of old-fashioned guest houses or "hostelries" that lodged pilgrims, the poor, women and children, emerged. Documents from back then have shown that during the time these buildings were used as guest houses, they offered a bed to sleep in, bread and heat to any one in need and, also cured the wounds in the feet of pilgrims who had walked long distances to worship the Virgin Guadalupe. As regards the care provided in the hospitals at that time, the references found attest to the great importance placed on nutrition, cleanness of the bed, rest, sleep, and also to the personal treatment given to the sick.
