Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the causes which explain the use/non use of preventive behaviours of sexually transmitted diseases. The research here presented was performed using a qualitative methodology. The site where this study was conducted is the Health Science Faculty of the King Juan Carlos University (students from three different career courses). The following factors were considered to be determinant in the use of preventive measures against sexually transmitted diseases: the isolation in the family in relation to questions about sex; the underestimation of the use of preventive measures such as prophylaxis and the perception of the preservative as a disintegrating factor in sexual relations. Public Health policies for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases ought to take into account the family environment (parents) and general population.

Public Health policies for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases in Spain have mainly focussed on collective risk (that is adolescents, prostitutes, etc.).
