Abstract

A retrospective descriptive study was performed at the International Centre for Neurological Restoration (CIREN), from July to October 1999 by the Department of Quality Control. The main objectives of this study were: to measure the influence of deviations and its impact on the quality of the nurses´ work in relation to patient health, to analyse its economic repercussion, and to ascertain the causes giving rise to these deviations. Another aim was to propose solutions through a plan of preventive and corrective measures in an attempt to eliminate the causes.

A documentary revision of the 14 inspections performed during that period by the Department of Quality Control was used as a tool to collect data. The studied dimensions were: sterile material, state or condition of medications, white linen, handling of hospital debris, "oral route" technique, washing hands technique, procedures used in ward rounds, hygiene and control of services. The cause-and-effect diagram (Palma Real) was applied.

The results showed that the problems with a higher score were: "Medications without dates", "unfulfillment of the "oral route" technique, "mishandling of hospital debris" and "unfulfillment of the technique for washing hands".

We concluded that the detected deficiencies do not appear to depend on material sources, but on organisational and discipline issues. No systematic and causal analysis of the results derived from the nursing inspections is carried out and thus the implementation of any corrective measures is compromised.
