Abstract
Mental diseases have been undervalued in graveness and frequency in spite of the significant degree of incapacity and death they generate. Social importance is due to an alteration of the individual´s capability to interact in the professional, family, social and leisure areas, which has a significant effect on the person’s quality of life and productivity.
The epidemiological scope of the most common mental illnesses affecting today´s society is described in this paper. Mental disease prevention is of paramount importance in the first level of healthcare delivery, as it should be the key point for early detection.
