Abstract
The role of the nursing professional has been modified and re-directed, not only by sociologic variables but also, and very significantly, by the advent of management tools applied to the health industry. In our country, the process starts with the development of the "New Management Model" (1984), designed to structure hospitals in the public sector using homogeneous criteria, setting the basis by the so called "Sign Project". Nurses must strive to document their interventions on the patient, grouping such interventions into a system that permits their measurement and evaluation, the normalisation of the practice, and the instauration of rigorous research lines to validate the results. Management tools are essential to further our knowledge on nursing interventions, a crucial aspect for the development of strategies regarding the planning of health, financial and education services.
