Abstract

The need for emergency contraception is evident, especially when the rate of non desired pregnancies and induced abortions is taken into account. Emergency contraception (EC) includes contraceptive methods available to women the days following unprotected sex and are aimed at the avoidance of a non desired pregnancy. The purpose of this article is to offer a constructive contribution towards a critical discussion on the subject of emergency contraception and to serve as thinking grounds for decision making in the daily practice of nursing. It also aims to serve as a teaching tool for nursing professionals when teaching health education to other women or couples who wish to learn more about the method. A review of the literature was undertaken to show the current status of emergency contraception.
