Abstract

Nursing logs are fundamental to ensure the continuity and quality of care, to facilitate communication among professionals, to develop research and to collaborate in education. The discharge report from the ICU, a referral document used among healthcare professionals, needs to be periodically updated and revised to adapt it to its function.

Objective: To determine the degree of satisfaction of healthcare professionals with the current format of the nursing discharge report, both at the ICU and on the ward.

Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. The sample consisted of ward nurses and ICU nurses at the Alicante university hospital who met the established criteria. The survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire.

Results: 60 questionnaires were completed on the hospitalisation wards and 51 at the ICU. 97% of the nurses is satisfied with the contents of the discharge report, finding it useful for their daily nursing routines and a good communication means between services. They also think the discharge report should be part of the medical history accompanying the patient. Nursing professionals propose a series of changes that will be incorporated into the new design and revision of the nursing discharge report.
