Abstract

The development of Outpatient Surgery has been one of the most important innovations in the field of surgery in the last few years. In 1995, the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid set up the Surgical Day Hospital, taking advantage of the hospital’s existing resources and marking the beginnings of the Outpatient Surgery program. The Outpatient Major Surgery Unit was created in 1997, with its own care areas, the nursing team actively participating in its design and organization. Nowadays, both Units coexist providing a solution for surgical processes that do not require hospitalization. Within this context and following the philosophy of the Ramón y Cajal Hospital Quality program, the study we present initiates a nursing care protocolisation program in the most frequent surgical processes within the Outpatient Major Surgery program, with the purpose of reducing variability in nursing practice.
