Abstract

The purpose of this work is to describe the registration process for newborns conducted in a primary care centre in collaboration with the public hospital network of the city of Manresa.
A standardised newborn care process is intended to establish a close and adequate relationship with the family that permits the resolution of any doubt or problem that might arise throughout the entire follow up process of the healthy infant.
The newborn care protocol is carried out during the first seven to fifteen days of life and includes a first contact with the centre´s Service of Paediatrics when the team is introduced to the parents/family, an assessment of the newborn´s and mother´s needs in their setting, health education to promote the infant´s and the caregivers´ health, and the planning of activities based on the support relationship as well the phone accessibility established with the nurse.
Up to now, the assessment of the results derived from the application of the nursing advocacy protocol has focused on the percentages of breastfeeding. Of the children born in January 2008 cared for in the primary care centre Sant Andrey of Manresa, 75% continued to be breastfeed after the four months of age and 70% after six.
The nursing dedication to the advocacy and care of the newborn favours compliance with the Healthy Child Programme on the part of the family.
