Despite the fact that school nursing in the Community of Madrid has been in existence for the last 30 years, it is still quite unknown in the general population and particularly in the healthcare professions. Approximately 100 nursing professionals work in the Community of Madrid in the educational setting. This number varies depending on the changing requirements of each grade and on the number of students with special needs at schools. Through two research projects conducted during the 2005/2006 and 2007/2008 school years, 28 nurses from special needs public schools (SNPS) and 15 nurses from kindergarten and primary public schools (KPPS) were randomonly interviewed using the personalised approach interview and prioritising those schools with the highest ratio of special needs students, we obtained the number of students in schools that had a school nurse, 14 special needs schools and 15 kinder and primary public schools) and the most common actions undertaken by the nurses in the school setting, as well as the different specific protocols used and health care programmes carried out by the nurses in the schools. The Community of Madrid has the highest amount of school nurse, both in special needs as well as in general primary public schools, hired by the Education Council that regulates special needs issues. As school nurses, we understand that the entire school population must receive integral health care: healthcare delivery as well as prevention and promotion of health through Health Education programmes as universal core subject in the academic curriculum.
