Abstract

Objective: to analyse the impact of the Nursing Methodology (NM) educational programme titled “Taking care of you” on the use of Functional Health Patterns (FHP) and NANDA, NOC and NIC standardized languages in the electronic histories of adult Primary Care patients of the Tenerife Health Area.
Method: intervention field study with before-after assessment. Educational programme: workshops, clinical sessions and interconsultations over the course of 6-8 weeks, conducted by the NM expert consultant nurse. The contents affect phases of the nursing process, standardized languages and application in the electronic history. Impact: absolute and relative frequency of histories that present FHPs, NANDA diagnoses, NOC objectives or NIC interventions. A synthetic indicator on the use of NM is constructed as the central trend of its grouping. Progression over time is analysed in the 11 centres involved, spanning a prior time period of 36 to 58 months and a later period of 2 to 24 months. The trend in both periods is assessed using linear regression coefficients in 95% confidence intervals with 5% bilateral significance tests.
Results: significant association was confirmed between percentage variables of histories with NM, FHP, NANDA, NOC and NIC, as well as their monthly growth, and the moment of intervention (pre-post). A four-fold post-intervention increase in monthly growth in the use of NM and a three-fold increase in the use of NANDA diagnostics were observed.
Conclusions: an educational intervention presenting the characteristics
described above increases the application of NM and its recording in the electronic histories of nursing consultations in Primary Care.
