Abstract

The incorporation of non-invasive high flow oxygen therapy to the paediatric emergency service has proven its efficacy in the treatment of paediatric respiratory pathologies versus traditional methods, such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) systems, or conventional oxygen therapy systems, such as nasal glasses. The Vapotherm® system makes it possible to manage and treat respiratory pathologies in children who were previously required to attend a paediatric critical care service. The implementation of this new system in the hospital where the authors of this article worked led to the review of the intervention procedures used by Nursing professionals in the aforementioned paediatric emergency service. The objective of this work is to share information on these new methods that have entailed the need to create and implement protocols and training programmes for professionals, enabling the development of new competences to improve the scientific and technical quality of nursing care in paediatric emergencies.
