The intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is an intra-arterial catheter that has a balloon at its distal portion, and which inflated synchronously with the heartbeat via a console, improves coronary artery perfusion and reduces left ventricular afterload.
Updating the nursing knowledge on patient care is necessary because IABP is the most widely used ventricular assist device in intensive care units. Because it is an invasive procedure with possible complications, its use requires continuous nursing surveillance.
The purpose of this paper is to provide updated knowledge on device management and care required by patients with IABP. We propose a standardized nursing care plan for patients with IABP that contains the most frequent nursing diagnoses, expected outcomes criteria and nursing treatment interventions and the potential complications and interventions for prevention and surveillance.
