Abstract
Objectives: to evaluate the effectiveness of Ivabradine to decrease HR (heart rate) and increase the functional capacity of patients presenting to the Virgen Macarena University Hospital (HUVM) of Sevilla.
Material and method: longitudinal descriptive case series that included 39 patients enrolled in the protocol of HUVM Ivabradine who met the inclusion criteria. Outcome variables: functional capacity of patients, which was measured by a weekly measurement of the HR, initial and final exercise tests and end ventriculography. A descriptive and comparison analysis was carried out using the ANOVA test of one factor for repeated measurements.
Results: statistically significant differences were observed in the decrease in HR (p = 0,000) during the second week of treatment and a subsequent stabilization from the third week onwards (p = 0,042). Regarding the exercise tests, statistically significant differences were observed between the initial and final stress tests (p = 0,000). Furthermore, the ventriculography revealed that the majority of patients had reached 53,44% of ventricular function.
Conclusions: patients in study achieved adequate HR for training after treatment with ivabradine and improved functional capacity. Ivabradine is representing an effective alternative for the treatment of elevated heart rate in patients who presented to the hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation unit, contributing to their early physical rehabilitation.
