Abstract

Objective: to determine the satisfaction of the women who had a cesarean section regarding breastfeeding (BF), taking into account whether the initiation of BF was early or late, and to identify factors associated with the start of maternal BF, the predisposition of the mother to continue with long-term BF and to determine the valuation of women regarding support received from the nurse in both cases.
Material and method: prospective observational descriptive study of two cohorts of women who gave birth by caesarean section, with early initiation of BF (A) and another with late onset (B), treated at two different hospitals where the intervention is part of the standard treatment. The sample was determined by investigators in 20 women in each cohort, selected using the criterion that the study subject was the mother of the first five newborns at term by cesarean section, between 1 july to 31 december 2011. Data collection was performed through two surveys conducted for this study by consensus of different experienced midwives from both hospitals, which was answered within 48-72 hours after the C-section.
Results: overall satisfaction is the early start of BF is a mean of 9,6 vs a 7,6 in the late start of BF (p < 0,001). The experience of the mother at the initiation of BF was “very good” for 93,7% in group A and "regular" for 37,5% for group B. The total number of participants in group A would repeat the experience of early contact (100%) and 68,7% from group B would not repeat the experience. The position in group A (37,5%) and pain in group B (31,2%) were the two most closely related factors. 81,7% of mothers in group A expressed their desire to continue to breastfeed long term, compared with 62,5% of mothers from group B. The support received from professionals was seen as “very useful” by 56,7% in group A and by 68,7% in group B.
Conclusion: mother satisfaction with breastfeeding after a cesarean is greater when BF is started early.
