Abstract
Epilepsy is a common disease in Spain, although most people who have this disease are well controlled with medication. Still, these patients need very specific care. Both people who are diagnosed for the first time as well as those with a established diagnosis, should receive adequate information to reduce the number of seizures and other side effects of the disease and its treatment.
The nursing professional plays a key role in improving the care of people with epilepsy and their families, mainly aimed at avoiding triggers of the same, to act the right way when the seizure occurs, to avoid potential complications of the disease and to achieve the highest level of self-care.
This article provides an updated description of the nursing management of epilepsy and proposes a series of recommendations aimed at sufferers of this disease and their families, all based on the review of the
scientific literature on these issues.
