Abstract

In Spain, the number of patients requiring artificial nutritional support is on the rise, and in the case of home enteral nutrition, a clear upward trend is taking place over the course of time, gastrostomy being the technique implemented for solving the problem of long-term artificial feeding. The Spanish Registry of Home and Ambulatory Artificial Nutrition (NADYA), operating under the Spanish Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (SENPE), indicates that the number of home enteral nutrition interventions rose by 5.11% in 2009, the number of patients with neurological disorders above and beyond oncological disorders having risen, each having meant an increase. A total of 21.19% thereof entailed enteral nutrition (EN) by gastrostomy tube.
Nursing professionals are directly involved in the entire process of providing patient care and their role is taking on progressively greater importance, good training being necessary so as to avail of sufficient know-how for dealing with this care by way of providing quality assistance. This study has been conducted for the purpose of contributing toward increasing the knowledge in this field and implementing better nursing care. To this end, a brief description has been provided as to the past evolution, the indications and the different techniques for performing a gastrostomy, focusing mainly on percutaneous radiological gastrostomy.
The experience of the Navarre Hospital Complex, the fast action protocol which was implemented in said hospital’s emergency service, the nursing care provided and certain monitoring advice resulting from serious consideration and nursing practices within the Interventionist Vascular Radiology service are all provided.
