Abstract

Objective: to determine the effectiveness, in terms of acquiring knowledge, of a clinical session focused on nurse intervention in malignant hyperthermia.
Materials and Methods: pre-experimental before-after study on surgical nurses who attended a training clinical session on “Nurse Intervention in Malignant Hyperthermia”, which was taught using an illustrative method. Three measurements were conducted: one before the session, a second one after the session had been conducted, and the last one after five months. A questionnaire which had been specifically prepared for this occasion was used. Study variables: years of experience, variables regarding the training session and the time of measurement.
Results: twenty-one nurses working in operating room and resuscitation were studied, there were no losses. In terms of correct answers to questions regarding the clinical session contents, there was a statistical significant change (p= 0.003) between answers before the session and immediately after, as well as between answers before the session and five months after (p= 0.002), but this difference was not significant (p= 0.156) comparing the  answers given after the session and at five months.
Conclusions: in view of the results obtained, the clinical session “Nurse Intervention in Malignant Hyperthermia” has been effective, because a general increase in correct answers has been observed after using the illustrative educational methodology. Clinical sessions for care are useful as an update, and in order to provide said care in a standard, fast, safe and efficient manner, ensuring the good evolution of users, and minimizing the risk of complications. Ultimately, this improves patients’ safety.
