Abstract

The Kangaroo Mother Care (or Kangaroo Mother Method) is a procedure by which skin-to-skin contact is established between the newborn and the mother, which encourages the mother-child bond. The objective of this paper is to analyze the scientific evidence for the Kangaroo Mother Method effects on preterm newborns or those with low weight at birth. To this end, a review has been conducted of scientific publications in the past five tears. Fifteen studies completed the selection criteria: three bibliographic reviews, eleven clinical trials, and quasi-experimental study. These studies linked the Kangaroo Mother Care with a reduction in morbimortality, pain relief, stimulation in neurological development, and an easier exclusive breastfeeding. Results showed that skin-to-skin contact reduces morbimortality and neonatal procedural pain. Moreover, it encourages exclusive mother breastfeeding. However, more studies are required in order to show its connection with neurological development.
