Abstract

Objective: to learn about the scientific evidence on the effects of Assisted Reproductive Technologies on children conceived through these techniques.
Method: a review of scientific literature has been conducted, through a bibliographic search in these databases: Pubmed, Cochrane, Biblioteca Virtual en Salud, Academic Google and Joanna Briggs Institute. The key words used in Spanish were: técnicas de reproducción asistida, efectos, malformaciones y/o anormalidades, neonato, embarazos únicos and recién nacido. For the databases in English, the terms used were: assisted reproductive technologies, malformation and/or abnormalities, newborn, singleton
and effects. Initially, no time limit was estimated for published articles; however, in Academic Google the search was restricted to the period from 2008 until the present day, due to the large amount of articles found.
Results and Conclusions: there are two main adverse outcomes associated with ARTs which appear in the majority of articles consulted: prematurity and low-weight newborns. At the same time, according to the majority or articles consulted, ARTs increase the number of multiple pregnancies. Some articles deny any connection of these with malformations, though the majority agree that these techniques might consider the risk of malformations. There could also be other consequences, such as an increase in obstetric complications, in NICU admissions, or epigenetic disorders.
