Abstract

Objective: to assess the competence of Intensive Care and Emergency nurses to incorporate and apply Evidence-Based Practice (EBP).
Methods: transversal descriptive study conducted on the total nursing staff (N=110) of the Intensive Care and Emergency Units from the Hospital Torrecárdenas (Almería). A validated tool was used for data collection: the Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (EBPQ-19). Socio-demographical variables were also measured. For treatment of data, descriptive statistical indicators were calculated, as well as hypothesis contrast tests (Student’s t, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson’s r).
Results: response rate was 100%. The attitudes of participants towards EBP showed the highest mean score (5.42), followed by knowledge / skills (3.61) and practice (3.40). Statistically significant differences were found among nurses working in the Intensive Care Unit and the dimension of practice (3.80 vs 2.98, p= 0.002); among those with another university degree and the dimension of knowledge (4.45 vs 3.52 , p= 0.014); and among those with training on evidence and each one of these dimensions: attitude (6.00 vs 5.32, p= 0.025), practice (4.41 vs 3.22, p= 0.001) and knowledge / skills (4.55 vs 3.45, p= 0.001). There were significant correlations between the three EBPQ-19 dimensions.
Conclusions: nurses showed positive attitudes towards EBP and its use to support clinical decision making; however, there is a lack of correlation between this positive attitude and the lower mean scores in the dimensions of knowledge/skills and practice.
