Abstract

Objective: to assess the Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) of patients admitted to hospital due to a new coronary event, and with previous AMI (Acute Myocardial Infarction), and to determine its associated socio-demographical factors.
Method: transversal descriptive study in patients with a past history of AMI and/or Acute Coronary Syndrome, admitted to a Cardiology Unit, after the second or subsequent coronary episode. Variables: HRQoL measured through the EQ5D-3L Questionnaire, which includes the VAS scale for self-assessment of health status at the time of the interview; gender, married status, area of origin, family unit, working situation, number of myocardial infarctions, and age. Hypothesis contrast tests were used in order to evaluate the statistical association (Student’s t, Pearson Correlation Coefficient; Mann–Whitney U test).
Results: the mean age was 73.28 years, and 68.9% were male. The mean score in the EQ5D-3L Questionnaire was 0.65 (SD: 0,34). The least troublesome dimension in the EQ5D-3L Questionnaire was “Personal care” (71.84% claim not having any problems), while the most troublesome was “Mobility” (62.14%). The EQ5D-3L was statistically significant regarding gender, married status and working situation. The self-assessment mean was 62 out of 100 (SD: 18.6).
Conclusions: the mean value obtained in the EQ5D-3L Questionnaire indicates a good HRQoL for a mean elderly age with at least one previous myocardial infarction, and who had not been involved in cardiac rehabilitation programs. A comprehensive intervention within a cardiac rehabilitation program, with active involvement by the Nursing staff, could achieve that patients and their relatives adopted cardioprotective habits, thus improving their CV condition.
