Abstract

Objective: to identify and quantify those interventions conducted by school nurses regarding health processes.
Method: a transversal descriptive study was conducted from February to March, 2012, in nine semi-private educational centers within the Community of Madrid. The work team, formed by the 11 school nurses from said centers, designed a model by consensus for the registry of nursing interventions (NIC), performed on students from said centers, and classified into 19 care procedures.
Results: overall, 25,248 nursing interventions were registered, which represent a mean 2.2 interventions per pupil. The daily rate of interventions ranged between 0.8 and 11.1, depending on each educational center. Accidents / injuries were the most frequent conditions which required school nurse intervention.
Conclusions: the school nurse office has a similar rate of visits than any other Primary Care Pediatric Nurse office. The model of registry used is valid in order to determine the workload of school nurses, the adaptation of nursing human resources in educational centers, and in order to conduct studies which will improve the strategies for prevention, promotion, and health education within the school setting.
