Abstract

Objective: to support with updated knowledge the importance of determining the nutritional status of patients with Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) who are receiving haemodialysis treatment, to have knowledge about the assessment tools required, and the periodicity in order to use them adequately.
Method: a narrative review has been conducted in PubMed, sCielo, Ocenet Salud, Cinahl, Dialnet, ScienceDirect, Cochrane, National Kidney Foundation. Articles were selected by year (2009-2014), and exclusion criteria were used (acute renal failure, peritoneal dialysis, pediatric feeding, and parenteral nutrition). Clinical practice guidelines were included, assessed through the Agree II tool, as well as systematic reviews assessed with the CARE tool, and articles with clinically and statistically significant results.
Results: five categories of analysis were described: frequent comorbidities, nutritional status, causes of malnutrition, assessment of the nutritional status, and alternatives for treatment and diet supplementation.
Conclusions: the nutritional assessment of patients with CRF is important because there is a high prevalence of malnutrition among them, and it represents a mortality predictor. The assessment tools are the set of biochemical tests, anthropometric measurement, bioimpedance, and overall subjective assessment.
