Abstract

Objective: to analyze and assess the satisfaction of relatives of those patients who have undergone surgery with the information received at the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).

Methodology: descriptive study conducted at the Post- Anesthesia Care Unit from the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona, on April, 2013. The sample included those first-degree relatives, who were present in the waiting room, of patients who had undergone Scheduled Major Surgery (SMS) and who remained over an hour at the PACU. Data were obtained through a selfprepared questionnaire based on the validated survey on family satisfaction with care at the Intensive Care Unit, FS-ICU (34) version 1, November, 24th, 2009. Said questionnaire was tested in 10 cases excluded from the study.

Results: 53 relatives were recruited, and their mean level of satisfaction with information was 8.7±1.1. There were no statistically significant differences with the information and those aspects associated. Out of those 53 relatives included in the survey, 16 had not received any information. All of them would have liked to receive it, and did not know how to ask for it. 95% of them valued as very positive the characteristics of information, and 100% the way they were treated by the reporter.

Conclusions: relatives presented high levels of satisfaction with the information received at the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. Regarding areas of improvement, 24 did not believe any improvement was required, 13 suggested receiving information before the day of the surgical procedure, and 11 expected regular information by the PACU staff.
