Abstract
Objective: to identify the main reasons which lead to undergoing an abortion among Cuban adolescents.
Method: a transversal descriptive study, in patients who had an abortion performed at the Curettage Department of the Hospital Universitario Mártires de Mayarí (Cuba), during the period from January to December, 2013. The study universe included 651 patients who attended the Abortion Department; the sample was finally made up of 225 cases with subjects between 10 and 18 years of age,
Results: a 55.3% of patients were included in the 14-to-16-year-old age group. The predominance of psychogenic causes was confirmed; and within these, the most frequent ones were family violence (64%), followed by divorce and family conflict, with 21% and 18.4%, respectively.
Conclusions: the reasons analyzed suggest that the active involvement by the Nursing Staff on the psychogenic causes for abortion can be very effective, and become an active part of treatment for improving the reproductive and sexual health of adolescents.
