Abstract
Protocols for multimodal rehabilitation or fast-track surgery include the set of perioperative methods used in order to accelerate the recovery of patients who have undergone surgery, without entailing any additional risk for them. The implementation of these programs will favour a reduction in mortality, nosocomial infection, post-operative pain and ileus, as well as in hospital stay. This will translate into a reduction in healthcare costs, and a faster reincorporation of patients to their everyday life. The activities included in these protocols represent a change in the previous manner of action. The implementation of these protocols and their adequate function will require a multidisciplinary team, correctly formed and trained. Within this team, nursing professionals will play a primary role, not only in terms of patient care, but also by educating and informing patients.
