It points to the search for the answers needed by nursing professionals, with the purpose of going beyond the challenges of the deeply established pragmatism resulting from the Cartesian Model imposed in the Brazilian Health System, in order to promote a system that will transform everyday care into excellent care. This article intends to lead readers to think about Leininger’s Theory in this search for dialog, and to encourage a closer relationship between the nursing professional and the person with a chronic disease, according to their own socio-cultural experience, and with the intention to promote self-care. Keywords: Transcultural nursing; Nursing care; cultural carechronicity Versión en Español Título: Potencialidades y limitaciones de la teoría de Leininger para la comprensión de la cronicidad
