Abstract
Objective: to determine which are the Nursing interventions that will improve treatment compliance in Type 2 diabetes, and to describe the Nursing interventions that have been implemented in different countries.
Method: search strategy: A bibliographic search was conducted in the following databases: Scielo, Lilacs, Medigraphic, Pubmed, Redalyc and Academic Google. The Medline Thesaurus (MeSH) was used, as well as its Spanish version (DesCS). The inclusion criteria were: quasi-experimental or experimental study with interventions conducted by the Nursing staff with the aim to increase treatment compliance on adult study subjects. Exclusion criteria: To combine therapeutic compliance with some type of addiction.
Results: a total of 4,582 documents were found, and 18 articles were selected out of these (three experimental studies, 13 quasi-experimental studies, and two controlled and randomized clinical trials). The interventions were mostly of educational nature; some of them combined the application of structured educational programs with follow-up by phone. In those interventions conducted at short term, eight out of the 18 interventions showed an effect upon compliance. For long-term interventions, six out of the 18 interventions were associated with moderately significant improvements in compliance; those which were effective for care were complex.
Conclusions: nursing interventions in order to increase therapeutic compliance in diabetes directed by nurses were associated with glycemic control and, therefore, treatment compliance. None of the interventions involved relatives in diabetic patient care.
