Abstract

Objective: to determine the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) among adult persons in the town of Santa María de Guía, located at the north of the Gran Canaria island.
Method: an observational, descriptive and transversal study in non-diabetic adult persons who approached the stand in an Open Day Event. The FINDRISC validated test was used. In order to assess the association between variables, the percentages were compared using the Chi-Square Test, and mean values with the One-Way ANOVA Test.
Outcomes: out of the 150 persons who approached the stand, 73 persons took part. Their mean age was 58.75 years, 56.2% were male, 38.4% had Primary Education, and 90.4% were non-smokers. Regarding risk categories according to the FINDRISC test, 27.4% had a slightly high risk, and another 27.4% had a high risk. The higher the age, the higher the score in the test (p < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were found between risk categories and gender.
Conclusions: around 30% of the persons presented a slighly high risk of developing T2DM, without any differences by gender. On the other hand, also around 30% had a high risk of developing T2DM. Being older is a risk factor for developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus initially. From the Primary Care setting, it is necessary that campaigns for detecting the risk of developing T2DM are conducted by healthcare professionals, and particularly Nursing professionals.
