Abstract

Objectives: to assess the levels of coping with death by Nursing Degree students, and to determine the factors associated with these levels of coping with death.
Methodology: a descriptive transversal study with a sample of 144 Nursing Degree students from two universities, selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. A questionnaire was designed that allowed to collect information about the sociodemographical characteristics of the participants in the study and the level of coping with death through the Bugen’s Scale (30 items). Descriptive, inferential and multivariate statistics were used.
Results: there were 72.92% women in the sample. The mean values and standard deviation of age was 22.12 (3.93) years, and the score for coping with death was 131.64 (21.34). The level of coping with death in women (128.72±21.02 scores) was significantly lower (p< 0.01) than in men (139.49±20.43 scores). The level of coping with death was reduced in 1.14 scores per each year of age. Third and fourth year students presented higher levels of coping with death than students in the first two years, although differences were not statistically significant.
Conclusions: the level of coping with death in Nursing students was within the normality range. The variables associated with the level of coping were gender, age and academic year.
