Abstract

Objective: to make at least 20% of patients included in a program to quit smoking resist the temptation to smoke after 3 months.
Materials and methods: a pretest-posttest quasi experimental study was carried one in one single group. Smokers who wished to quit the habit were included, excluding those who suffered from psychiatric disorders and/or drug users. A staged and structured appointment program was followed. Data was collected by personal interview at the beginning and a satisfaction questionnaire filled in at study completion.
Results: ninety-nine patients started the program. Twenty-seven (27,3%) quit smoking at 3 months. Of these, 17 did not need any drug therapy. One took bupropion and 9 nicotine candy. None required nicotine patches. Previous attempts to quit smoking were as follows: 0,78 (SD:0,85) succeeded and quit smoking against a 1,99 (SD: 2,35) who did not succeed in the attempt. Average number of appointments in subjects who succeeded was 4,85 (SD:1,23) and 1,88 (SD:1,53) in those who did not (P<0,0001).
Conclusion: it is possible to quit smoking by receiving adequate counseling, where the role of the nurse becomes indispensable. Any achievement is a success, in view of the high morbimortality produced by tobacco in active and in passive smokers.
