Abstract

Objective: to analyze the evidence available about the factors determining quality of life in persons with Parkinson’s Disease.
Method: a narrative review based on the bibliographic search of literature in TripDatabase, Scopus, SciELO, PubMed, Dialnet, Cinahl, Cuiden and Cochrane Library. The descriptors used for this search were, in Spanish: “enfermedad de Parkinson”, “calidad de vida”, “actividades de la vida diaria”, “factores asociados”, “salud holística”, “evaluación de necesidades”, and in English: “Parkinson’s disease”, “quality of life”, “activities of daily living”, “factors associated”, “holistic health” and “needs assessment”, including the Boolean operator and to join the different key words. There were time limitations, and the search included documentation from September, 2015 to April, 2016. The inclusion criteria were studies associated with the use of specific questionnaires for the disease, but generic tools were accepted. Some studies with a small sample size were included, due to the interest in the setting of their research. No pharmacological treatment research was included, or about health-related quality of life (HRQL) in advanced therapies, because management techniques are very advanced.
Results: the areas with the highest impact were those associated with the deterioration in physical function, mobility, and daily life activities. The symptomatic, psychoaffective and social clinical aspects showed positive significant correlations in global scores when linked with quality of life. There was a high level of commitment in terms of advanced stages, level of disability, and comorbidities.
Conclusions: the parameters studied have allowed to assess patients’ needs, as well as to reach a more comprehensive understanding of the process of this disease, allowing a screening of those strict interventions that can help to improve quality of life.
