Abstract

Objective: to analyze the evidence available about current barriers or obstacles for the inclusion of telemedicine in the Obstetrics setting.
Method: a narrative review based on a bibliographic review of literature in PubMed, Cochrane (in English and Spanish), Elsevier and Cuiden. The descriptors used for the search were in Spanish: “tecnología de la información”, “telemedicina”, “teleasistencia”, “sistema de salud”, “salud móvil”, “gestión de recursos”, “cambio organizacional”, “implementación”, “adopción”, “obstáculos”, “gestantes”, “obstetricia”; and in English: “information technology”, “telemedicine”, “health systems”, “resources management”, “organizational innovation”. Time limits were used, and there was a search for documents from January, 2010 to August, 2017. The inclusion criteria were: any type of studies associated with the use of telemedicine, and that offered results, comparisons or statistics about the application of telemedicine in obstetric units.
Results: three types of barriers or obstacles have been found: those regarding organization, those involving Obstetrics professionals, and those which affect the healthcare users, who are mostly concerned about these barriers: accessibility, computer skills, and safety and confidentiality of information.
Conclusions: the most relevant barriers found are: problems regarding technology, resistance to change by the healthcare staff, and cost of the service, as well as the aspects of safety and confidentiality of the information.
