Abstract

Objective: to determine emotional response in patients hospitalized with advanced chronic disease.
Method: a transversal descriptive study on an intentional sample of 71 patients with advanced chronic disease admitted to two tertiary hospitals in Granada. Tools: International Affective Picture System (IAPS) (images were neutral, unpleasant non-activating, pleasant non-activating, unpleasant activating and pleasant activating) jointly with the Self Assessment Manikin (SAM) (emotional reaction to images, through pictogram, in three dimensions: valence, activation and dominance). For each dimension and condition of images, there was a calculation of the difference between the percentage of participants that were above and below the mean (+/- 1 SE) in the standard population. ANOVA test was used for comparison between means.
Results: age mean: 73.3 years (SD= 9.14). Significant differences were observed around the “Dominance” (p= 0.000) and “Activation” (p= 0.041) dimensions. Neutral images and unpleasant non-activating images were more stimulating for chronic patients than for standard subjects. In pleasant activating images and, to a lower extent, pleasant non-activating images, participants showed a deficit in the emotional process of pleasant stimuli.
Conclusions: the evaluation of emotional reactions conducted with IAPS showed that patients in the study presented an emotional state different from the overall population, characterized by higher sensitivity towards stimuli with negative and neutral nature. Likewise, a deficit was highlighted in the acknowledgement of pleasant stimuli and higher emotional control when faced with all type of stimuli.
