Abstract

Research on health policies and systems is one of the types of research least conducted by nursing professionals. The reasons for this are associated with specific aspects of the research area and its interdisciplinary nature, as well as with distinctive features of nursing practice, where patient care is prioritized over aspects associated with the health services and system. The importance of this type of studies has been acknowledged, in order to strengthen nursing practice, expand its public health profile, and provide evidence for the generation of health policies in the national setting. The studies to assess quality of care from different approaches, value patient experience regarding care, measure care costs, confirm cost accessibility, and evaluate the healthcare technologies associated with practice, are necessary for policy definition and the healthcare system transformation, with the contribution of nursing professionals. This article presents a set of proposals for the development of this type of research by nursing professionals, taking into account four decisive factors: the limitations of this professional group, understanding the theoretical models, challenges to overcome, and skills to be developed.
