Contact email: anawesfer@hotmail.com Abstract Tracheostomy is a surgical technique allowing direct communication between the trachea and the lower respiratory airways with the exterior through a stoma, an orifice where a cannula is inserted to allow the passing of air. Even though this is a relatively frequent technique in Intensive Care Units, it still presents some risks; therefore, a good management of the stoma will be essential to prevent any complications associated with its care. The change of cannula, both internal and external, and the aspiration of endotracheal secretions are usual manoeuvres that can be detrimental to patient evolution if inadequately performed. The objective of this article is to describe the care required by critical patients with tracheostomy, in order to provide higher safety and quality to clinical practice.
