Abstract

Objectives: to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) according to age and gender among the population seen at a Primary Care Centre in the Region of Murcia, as well as to analyze the influence of these risk factors upon cardiovascular disease.
Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study including a population of 40-to-99-year old persons from the “Antonio García” Health Centre in Molina de Segura, registered as “individuals candidate to present and/or presenting CVRFs” between May and September, 2017 (n= 2.721). Simple random sampling was conducted, based on a list of patients with inclusion criteria exported from the OMI-AP Clinical Record Manager, from where the rest of variables were also obtained: age, gender, hypertension (HPN), diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidemia (DLP), obesity, smoking, ischemic cardiopathy, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral artery disease. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were conducted (Chi square, Student’s t).
Results: final sample n= 250. The findings were: 66% prevalence of HTN, 56.4% DLP, 32.4% DM, 32% OB and 13.2% active smoking. No statistically significant differences were found regarding their presence or not according to gender (p> 0.05). The mean age was higher among those who presented HTN (YES: = 68.8; NO: = 62.6; p= 0.000) and among non-smokers (YES = 61.0; NO = 67.6; p= 0.007). In the three CVDs observed, the most frequent CVRF were HTN and DL.
Conclusions: The results obtained show a high prevalence of HTN in the first place, followed by DLP. Hypertension is the cardiovascular risk factor with the highest prevalence in CVDs among the population studied.
