Abstract

Objective: to determine the differences in perception between relatives of hospitalized children and healthcare professionals regarding the implementation of Family-Centered Care (FCC) in the Complejo Hospitalario de Toledo.
Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study (January to March, 2020). The target population of the study were the relatives of children hospitalized for at least 72 hours, and the professionals from the Hospitalization and Intensive Care Units where they stayed. The sample size was estimated at 42 participants per group, who were selected by consecutive sampling. Sociodemographic variables were studied, regarding admission, occupation, and previous training. The FCC Perception result variable was measured with the validated questionnaire on FCC (from 21 points: the lowest, to 84 points: the highest perception). Descriptive statistics indexes and bivariate analysis were conducted.
Results: the study included 111 professionals (18% with training in FCC), and 42 relatives. Statistically significant differences were found between the perception of FCC by professionals (= 63.9; SD= 6) and relatives (= 69.2; SD= 9.1) (p= 0.000). Significant differences were found between the perception by professionals in the Neonatal Hospitalization Unit (= 67.5; SD= 5.4) and those in the NICU (= 60.94; SD= 6.5)
(p= 0.024). No statistically significant differences were found based on the professional category of the healthcare staff or the age of relatives.
Conclusions: the perception of FCC was high in the case of relatives, and medium for healthcare staff; this difference was statistically significant. Likewise, there were differences between the perception by neonatal hospitalization professionals and those from neonatal intensive care.
