Abstract

Objective: to understand the level and quality of nursing research, as well as the type of activities of research and dissemination conducted at a university hospital.
Method: a cross-sectional descriptive study, conducted from May 17th to June 9th, 2021, at the Hospital Universitario de Jerez de la Frontera, Andalusia (Spain). The study subjects were nurses who had been working at the hospital over six months and were willing to participate. An ad hoc questionnaire was designed for data collection; it was distributed in electronic format and consisted of four blocks: sociodemographic variables, collaboration in projects or affiliation to research groups, scientific activity, both personal and interdisciplinary.
Results: the study included 264 nurses; 11.2% had a master degree and 0.8% had a doctorate. 7.3% of them had collaborated in some funded research project, and there was a 4% membership to PAIDI groups. Contribution to congresses or other activities was of 17% for oral and 19% for written communications. Regarding the publication of research results, 22% of the participants in the survey had published at least one scientific article, and 4.6% had been recorded in journals with impact factor. The collaboration with other disciplines in conducting research studies was 11%.
Conclusions: it was observed that the level and quality of research by hospital nurses were limited. Participation in research groups was very poor, and the themes identified were highly varied.
