Abstract

Objective: to determine the cultural and leisure activities that the institutionalised elderly population perform, comparing such activities with the IMSERSO 2000-02 study.

Material and methods: cross-sectional transverse study, performed in a nursing home in Barcelona. The target population were individuals aged >65 years of age, with no cognitive deterioration (Mini-Mental 24/35) (n=40). A questionnaire was elaborated to determined the leisure activities and the day to day activities performed by the elderly as well as his or her like or dislike for life.
Results: mean age of the studied population (n=40) was 81 years (SD: 8,9), with a dependence level between mild (46%) to moderate (36%). As regards the cultural and leisure activities, the results obtained in the studied population as compared to those found in the IMSERSO study, showed similar likes and dislike for life. The studied population felt much worse, less useful and with lower stamina as compared to the rest of the Spanish population. The studied subjects could not perform basic tasks such as combing and shaving (87,2) or washing (79,5%).
Conclusion: dependence in relation to daily life activities can affect the performance of cultural and leisure activities. Institutionalisation can make these elderly patients even more dependent than necessary in certain areas. It is important to elaborate programmes that involve the aged in activities that help him or her improve his state of mind.
