Abstract
Objective: to evaluate the current situation on the prevention of lesions caused by accidental puncture during the insertion of a peripheral venous catheter (PVC) and to analyse the risk conducts linked to the inadequate use of normal PVC among nursing professionals in Specialised Care in area 1 of the Valencia Healthcare System.
Material and method: cross-sectional descriptive study conducted at the regional hospital of Vinarós (Castellón) over the months of January and February 2005. A total of 117 nursing graduates participated in the study. An anonymous self elaborated questionnaire was administered to the respondents for data collection. The SPSS statistical software package was used for statistical purposes.
Results: 79,5% used normal PVC vs 20.5% who used safety PVC. 73,1% did not use a container to collect sharp or cutting objects and 74,4% had not taken any special courses on biological hazards.
Conclusions: the results obtained confirm the need to increase training and information activities on biological hazards, to modify attitudes and behaviours and to insist on the use of safety PVC or adequate sharp or cutting objects containers.
