Abstract

Exsanguinous transfusion is a technique used to maintain serum bilirubin under neurotoxic levels generally in new-borns with hyperbilirubinemia. The fractioned replacement of blood in the newborn with donor blood and the replenishment of the same amount of blood with new blood is performed through the umbilical vein. This is a safe technique that avoids having to handle catheters constantly, thus decreasing the risk of infection. It is also a more physiological technique as it obtains the hemodynamic stabilisation of the child.
The objective of this study is to describe the procedure to perform an exsanguinous transfusion, as mastery of the technique and the collaboration of the doctor and the nurse are required.
