Abstract

Orotracheal intubation is a difficult technique requiring the assistance of a nurse, both during the insertion of the catheter as well as afterwards for management and monitoring of the patient.
Even though this is a procedure more frequently performed at the emergency department, operating theatre and ICUs, all nurses should know how to act during any medical emergency where orotracheal intubation might be required.
When an intubation is required, the life of the patient is at stake and the success of the procedure depends to a large extent on the correct performance of the professionals performing the intubation.
Herein we describe step by step how an orotracheal intubation is performed, the required material and the intervention of the nurse as an assistant.
