Abstract

Renewing Primary Health Care (PHC) has emerged as a response to health inequities generated by globalization and health reforms based on principles of marketing.
This paper presents an overview of global trends and the tenets and principles of PHC renewal in order to identify opportunities and challenges for community nursing.
The renewal of the PHC opens new spaces for community nurses in relation to the creation of healthy environments, improving the quality of life and leadership in the analysis and policy development. Another opportunity is
through the development of innovative models to improve access to services, reduce the risk of complications and avoidable hospitalizations through integration and monitoring services to patients. However, community nurses need to increase their ability to negotiate the expansion of their practice.
