Abstract

Objectives: to analyse the active role of Pediatric Nursing residents in the leadership, research and professional representation settings, highlighting the key skills and strategies that strengthen their professional development.
Methods: a narrative review based on academic literature, institutional documents, and training experiences by residents. Databases such as PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus were consulted, using terms associated with training, leadership, and research in Pediatric Nursing.
Results: residents are facing a “hero’s journey”, which includes stages such as the adaptation to a new clinical setting, participation in professional networks, and integration of new technologies in order to optimize their performance. Academic advisors and allies are essential in order to guide their learning and encourage their leadership. Besides, research and formal training are consolidated as essential cornerstones for residency, providing access to doctorate programs and contributing to the advance of knowledge.
Conclusions: the development of clinical, research and leadership skills during residency are key for the training of highly qualified specialists. It is necessary to strengthen training programs with innovative resources and support policies that promote the visibility and impact of residents in the setting of pediatric care.
