Abstract

Purpose: Our systematic literature review (SLR) was aimed to summarize state-of-the-art understanding of women experiences in voluntary pregnancy termination (VPT).
Methods: A literature search in several databases was performed; 347 articles were found; 7 of them were selected. Findings were reported for four wide categories: existential issues; emotional issues; physical feelings and self-responsibility on fecundity regulation.
Conclusions: Maternal health and obstetric nurses play a significant role in VPT, as well as in women sexual and reproductive health promotion; this is similar to the role midwives play at an European level. Women experiences are mainly focused on existential issues; on a whirlwind including ambivalent emotions and feelings, with relief feeling at the end of the process being most prevailing; on a number of physical perceptions; on conceptus expulsion process; and on self-responsibility regarding termination process.
